Self-Hosted Socioboard 5.0: Open Social Media Management for Teams

Your agency juggles nine social logins, a spreadsheet for approvals, and a SaaS bill that charges per seat every time a intern joins. Postiz is the modern Docker stack; some teams still want the older open-source social suite that predates the agentic scheduling wave.

Socioboard 5.0 is that lineage: ~1.5k GitHub stars, marketed as an open "social technology enabler" with a commercial cloud at socioboard.com and self-hosted Socioboard Core you run yourself. It combines publishing, scheduling, team tasks, RSS curation, analytics reports, and multi-account management across multiple social networks — aimed at agencies, SMBs, and ecommerce teams who want one dashboard instead of native apps per platform.

What it actually does

Socioboard is social media management, not website analytics. Typical workflows:

  • Multi-account inbox — connect several networks (upstream Core docs reference nine platforms) and operate from one place.
  • Schedule and automate posts — queue content for when audiences are active; reduce manual posting.
  • Team collaboration — assign tasks, permissions, and track who published what.
  • Analytics and email reports — dashboard stats and scheduled reports to stakeholders.
  • RSS and content curation — feed discovery and filtering to fill the calendar.
  • Plugins — Core is extensible for custom workflows rigid SaaS tools skip.

Version 5.0 splits into Node.js microservices (User, Feeds, Publish, Update, Notification, Common API) plus a PHP web front end. That is a different beast from a single Docker compose file — plan for PM2, multiple ports, MongoDB, and MySQL.

Why self-host?

OAuth tokens stay on your metal. Social management tools hold powerful API credentials. Running Socioboard on a Canadian VPS keeps tokens, draft copy, and client lists inside infrastructure you control — relevant for agency contracts and PIPEDA.

Escape per-seat SaaS. Open Core avoids subscription caps when you have many operators or client workspaces — you pay servers and admin time instead.

Customize workflows. Open-source messaging in the README targets approval chains, compliance, and moderation needs commercial tools flatten. Forks and plugins are the point.

Trade honesty. Installation is manual (see INSTALLATION.md): Node 14+, npm, PM2, nodemon, five free ports, Mongo and MySQL credentials, config files per service. This is not a fifteen-minute hobby deploy; budget ops hours.

What running it takes

Follow the repo's installation guide on a clean Linux host:

  • Install Node, PM2, MongoDB, MySQL; export NODE_ENV.
  • npm install in each API microservice folder (User, Feeds, Publish, Update, Notification, Common).
  • Configure database creds and service configs before starting services under PM2.
  • Deploy the PHP frontend against the API gateway URLs you choose.
  • Monitor logs per microservice — failures often show up in one service while others look fine.

Size RAM for Node processes plus databases (4 GB is a floor; production agencies want more). TLS at nginx, firewall internal ports, backup both databases, and patch Node dependencies on a schedule — legacy stacks do not patch themselves.

If you want Postiz-style Docker and MCP agents, Socioboard is the wrong fit. If you need a mature multi-service Core you can extend, Socioboard still has a niche.

Who it's for (and who should skip it)

Good fit: marketing agencies with ops staff, enterprises wanting on-prem social tooling, teams already on Mongo/MySQL who can maintain PM2.

Maybe skip it: solo creators (use native schedulers or Postiz). Teams allergic to PHP + Node microservices maintenance. Anyone expecting turnkey Docker in 2026 without reading INSTALLATION.md — frustration guaranteed.

Hosting it in Canada

Socioboard fits a dedicated VPS or small Docker-adjacent stack (databases on the same host or managed DB): Beauharnois/Toronto, private networking, nightly Mongo/MySQL backups.
